To get on the path of getting rid of fear, you have to stop getting rid of it.
Sounds odd, doesn’t it?
But if you remember the phrase «where there is attention, there is energy,» it all makes sense. Anything we focus our attention on — grows. So when we stop fighting fear, it stops pushing back.
Imagine a man riding a bike who is afraid of falling off.
He keeps thinking about the fall and feeds this fear with his attention. And at some point, it is no longer him who is behind the wheel, but his overfed fear. Now the man is like a puppet controlled by fear, hangs out somewhere behind the bike and has no control over anything. What can he do?
Get behind the wheel. Start «feeding» yourself and focus on your actual experience in the moment. And starve your fear. Talk to it condescendingly, as if you are the master and in control:
«Oh, fear! Hi. Thanks for coming, thanks for your vigilance. I’ll need you again someday. Well, now sit right here in the back. Are you worried? It’ll be fine. Just sit here and breathe. I’ll drive.»
What feeds you fear?
Thoughts racing in your head and lack of action.
What feeds your confidence? Action.
I could talk a lot about types of fear, ways to overcome them, etc., but in a nutshell, working with fears consists of 2 points:
— Determine if the threat is real.
Is a wolf chasing me while I’m riding my bike? Will it kill me if I fall? What is the likelihood that I will die riding my bicycle?
— If the threat is real (a boar is really chasing you or a fighter missile is flying at you) — stop doing it.
— If the threat is artificial — let’s say your are going for an interview a very important one — be afraid, breathe, but do it anyway — And with each action the fear will dissolve.
There is also a special kind of fear, «blanket fear”. This is a situation when we don’t want to look at something unpleasant in our life or personality. Therefore, we hide behind fear. These fears can be dispelled by practicing mindfulness.
That’s it. Now you’re amazing and you know how to manage fear.
